The play, written by George F. Walker, tells the story of a young woman who is taking a step back from her life in an effort to figure out what she should do next. The interesting people around her are not the most helpful people in the world. While they all love her on some level, they exacerbate her problems rather than help them.
Loretta, played by Sydney Maier, moved to the Southwest to escape her tragic yet slightly comical past. After her husband cheated on her with her friend, she decides to cheat on him with his friend. A bear then eats her husband. She finds out she is pregnant and the other man is the father. The play begins with her in her motel room in the Southwest.
She meets some interesting characters while being a waitress at a steakhouse and at the hotel. Sophie, played by Rachel Rizzuto, is a daughter of the Russian owners of the motel. Dave (James Bezy) is a guy she meets and agrees to help get a promotion. Michael (Lucas Neff) may or may not be a pimp.
The small cast does a great job on moving the short play quickly, leaving you wanting more at the end. The play is wickedly funny. While Maier is the star of the play, Rizzuto, Neff and Bezy steal the show with their one-liners and perfect timing. Rizzuto's character has the funniest lines. Her timing and accent were perfect. Neff and Bezy also deliver their lines with excellent timing and their physical comedy is worth the price of admission alone. The fight scenes are a combination of a schoolyard brawl and a catfight, exactly what you would imagine a fight between two people who obviously have never fought in their lives.
What makes this a great production is how fearless the actors are. The play centers on a woman's consideration and decision to make a series of erotic films in order to make some money. Maier did not seem uncomfortable in the least having to appear on stage in her underwear; neither did Bezy or Neff, who also have a fight scene in their underwear, which ended up on a bed. Because the actors were not afraid to really put themselves out there, they were able to take the play to another level.
"Featuring Loretta" is a fun, sexy play that moves quickly and is only an hour and 15 minutes long. Tickets are $9 for students, $12 for faculty and staff and $14 for the general public. How could anyone not enjoy a play that has fighting, hot bodies in underwear, kidnapping, porn and a story of two men getting eaten by bears?
The play will show Wednesday at 2:15, and Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm.
